Youth Film Project

Midsummer Music 2016 enjoyed a brand new element thanks to funding from the National Lottery Awards for All fund. We were able to purchase video-cameras, tripods, hard-drives and microphones with the grant and for several weeks prior to the festival, local video artist Chris Helsen led workshops in Gatehouse’s Youth Drop-In to instruct our young people in the art of film-making. Over the festival weekend every venue was visited by our intrepid young camera-folk. Under Chris’s watchful eye they chose good angles and documented almost every gig with an enthusiasm that rubbed off on artists and audience alike. Post-festival, the team have been reconvening to learn about editing footage, providing us with priceless videos of some of the weekend’s most exciting gigs. This work is ongoing, building the youngsters’ capacity for self-led projects and making 2016 the best-documented festival we’ve held yet.

We can’t wait to see what future projects these aspiring video-journalists can undertake with their equipment and expertise, and our thanks goes to Chris, our generous funders and the kids who acquitted themselves so brilliantly. Well done!
